CHAPTER 2

2012

Aarav was sitting beside Kriti on a bench of the colony's park ,trying to cheer her up becaus he'd just come after receiving an earful from her mother about getting less marks i athematics.

She hated mathematics but Aarav loved it. He also loved to rub it in her face that he wa etter in it than her. But not today, he hated seeing her like this, all sad and dejected.

"Kriti, let it be now. It was just a test. No big deal", he tried to make her understand.

"For you it might not be a big deal but for me it is!", she exclaimed.

"You know what? Wait here, I'll be back in ten minutes ", he said and walked away.

Kriti was confused, thinking did she say something to offend him? Nonetheless she waite hile regretting all her choices that led her into this situation. Her thoughts came to halt a he sudden Aroma of khandvi stopped it. She searched for the source of this delightful smel nd turned to find Aarav standing behind the bench holding khandvis wrapped in aluminu oil.

Without even thinking Kriti took the khandvi from his hand and started munching on it. Aara alked around and sat.

"Arre, mein tumhare liye nahi laya ye toh mere the", Aarav said playfully.

(Hey, those were for me.)

"Mujhe pata hai tumhe khandvi nahi pasand toh ye natak band karo", Kriti said, narrowin er eyes.

( I know you don't like it so stop the act.)

"Kya natak ki baat kar rahi ho tum? Mein kabhi natak nahi karta.", Aarav said.

(What act are you talking about? I don't do acting.)

"Accha, tum natak nahi karte. Toh fir wo kya kiya tha tumne ruby ma'am ke saamne ja nhone tumhe answer dene bola tha geography class mein?" She retorted. Deepening he oice to make it sound like Aarav's she continued, "ma'am mujhe chakar aa rahe hai. Ma'a an I go to the infirmary?" She giggled.

(Oh so you don't act but what did you do in front of Ruby ma'am when she asked you t nswer a question in geography class.) (Ma'am I'm feeling a bit dizzy, can I go to th nfirmary?)

"Woh toh thoda karna padta hai jab answer na aaye" , he said, defending himself.

(I was supposed to do something to save myself.)

"Acha Bachu?", Kriti asked, playfully.

(Oh really?)

"Haa aur khabardar ye kisiko bataya toh" , he said, trying to threaten her.

(Yes and dare you say this to anyone.)

"kya karoge bataya toh", she said, taking the challenge.

(What if I do?)

" kuch nahi karunga bass tumhari mummy ko bata dunga ki tum tiffin pura nahi karti au achi hui roti aur sabzi school ke bahar kutte ko khila deti ho", he said as if he'd bee lanning to tell this to someone.

( I'll do nothing but just tell your mum that you don't finish the food given in your tiffin an ive it to the dog outside school.)

"You wouldn't dare", she threatened .

"Oh I would only if you start it otherwise I'm good " he smirked knowing he was successful i aking her divert her attention from a bad math test to their playful banter.

"By the way, did you bring this khandvi for me? Sach batana." She requested at the end.

(Say truthfully.)

"I know about your love for khandvi and thought ki tumhe accha lagega kha ke." He admitte ashfully.

( and I thought that you'd feel good after eating it.)

"Thank you!" Kriti said, giving him a full blown smile. "Par paise kisne diye?"

(But who gave you the money?)

Scratching his neck as if caught doing something wrong he replied, " mummy ko bola ki bal ho gaya hai aur naya lena hai ".

(I told mom that I lost a ball and want to buy a new one.)

Kriti felt special knowing that he'd done something so simple but so sweet to her. She fel pecial and seen.

At the growing age of twelve she was fascinated by him (secretly).
